Academic Overview

teacher meeting. 175.150 Best Practices
Our staff is committed to improvement. This means that we keep up with current research in education and participate in on-going staff development. We have high expectations for our students and ourselves. We are committed to reaching our expectations.

As continual learners, staff members at Sawgrass meet in grade-level teams and curriculum teams to learn the latest best practices, review achievement data and plan together. Group planning allows teachers to gain insight into a variety of techniques and strategies which allow every child the opportunity to grow and learn.

Teachers emphasize the reading, writing, mathematical and thinking skills required for students to be successful. By projecting confidence in your child's ability to do well on standardized testing, you will increase his/her opportunities to achieve optimum scores. The State of Florida currently requires the following tests for elementary school students: Grade Three, Four and Five take the - Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in reading and math. Furthermore, fourth graders take the Florida Writes composition exam.

Reading Counts
Many students are having great success in the Reading Counts Program. Students check out books at the Media Center then read them at school and at home. When finished, they take a test on a computer in class or in the Media Center. Each test passed is worth points, based on the difficulty of the book. Some students have already earned more than 100 points, and many others have more than 50 points. When children reach the 25, 50, 75 and 100 point levels, they are given ribbons on WSAW, our live television channel.

bookfair.175.150 Library Information Center
The Library Information Center is an extension of the classroom. It's a specialized area where resources and enrichment activities benefit both students and staff. Among the choices available to students are many outstanding fiction, nonfiction and reference books. Parents are invited to visit and check out materials for their families. Additionally, the center houses WSAW, our student-staffed closed-circuit television network. Daily WSAW programs include opening announcements and recognition of many school activities.

Character Education
One of our core values at Sawgrass Lake Elementary is character education. We believe that character education is the foundation for good citizenship and effective learning. We teach students successful life skills as part of our everyday curriculum, focusing upon respect, honesty, responsibility and self-motivation. Children participate in this program in all aspects of their school day, including classroom guidance lessons. These skills describe how we want to treat each other in our school. This goes for our entire community - teachers, students and parents. When we all work to meet these expectations, Sawgrass Lake is an enjoyable and positive environment in which to work and learn.
